Bringing Library Collections to life:

Making Library Resources the Heart of Every Program

What makes a library more than a community space? Our collections.

Yes, libraries are vibrant community hubs — but they’re not just gathering places. What sets us apart is our rich tapestry of collections: books, digital resources, historical archives, learning tools, and more. These collections are not just static resources — they’re dynamic foundations for connection, engagement, and discovery.

To truly celebrate what makes libraries unique, we need to embed our collections into every program we offer.

Why Collections Matter

Library collections are more than inventory — they are invitations. When thoughtfully displayed and used within programs, they entice readers, spark curiosity, and provide pathways into deeper exploration of ideas, stories, and cultures. Programs offer the perfect opportunity to showcase collections in action and create connections that continue long after the event ends.

Well-designed programs not only foster a love of reading, but also promote lifelong learning, wellbeing, and a sense of belonging. They can even be the first touchpoint for people who’ve never engaged with a library before — offering a chance to introduce both them and their families to the collections we’ve curated for them.

Grounded in Standards, Led by Staff

The APLA-ALIA Standards and Guidelines for Australian Public Libraries (2021) provide a clear mandate for quality public programming, stating that library programs should:

  • Inspire a love of reading and literature
  • Build literacy and language skills
  • Facilitate lifelong learning
  • Enable personal development
  • Foster discussion and innovation based on authoritative information
  • Celebrate culture and heritage
  • Promote inclusion, tolerance, and respect
  • Encourage community connection and engagement

As library staff, we are uniquely positioned to bring these goals to life by intentionally connecting programs with our collections.

Practical Tips: Embedding Collections into Programs

From Kate Hansen, Programs Manager at Yarra Plenty Regional Library

Here are some actionable ways to ensure collections are front and center in your program planning and delivery:

Before the Program

  • Use titles or themes from the collection as inspiration for event names
  • Reference at least three relevant titles in your event descriptions
  • Promote the event through eye-catching in-branch displays of related materials
  • Consult your collections team for suggestions that align with the audience and theme

During the Program

  • Feature book bundles or curated titles available for borrowing
  • Highlight both print and digital collections, including eBooks and databases
  • Demonstrate library tech (like how to download and use the library app) during tech-based events

After the Program

  • Offer a themed reading list or book bundle takeaway
  • Gather feedback to inform future programming and related collection displays
  • Follow up with a related event or online content to extend engagement

Always:

  • Prioritise collections that are inclusive and representative of a diverse community
  • Leverage community interests and local trends to ensure relevancy
  • Clearly define how collections support learning, connection, and wellbeing outcomes in all program communications

Program Ideas That Spotlight Collections

Some types of events are especially well-suited for showcasing collections. Consider:

  • Author talks that highlight specific genres or themes
  • Cooking workshops inspired by your cookbook collection
  • Craft or maker sessions based on instructional titles
  • Character-themed storytimes or STEAM activities rooted in popular series
  • Cultural celebrations that showcase literature, music, and media from diverse backgrounds

Be intentional with your language too. Use your event blurbs to connect directly with the collection:

  • “Explore your creativity in this hands-on craft session, inspired by our arts and maker titles.”
  • “Join us for a culinary adventure, drawn from our extensive recipe book collection.”

Final Thoughts: Why It Matters

Collections are what make us a library. When we center them in every program — whether it’s a hands-on workshop, a quiet storytime, or a lively author Q&A — we not only highlight the value of our resources, we enrich the entire community experience and promote the love of reading.

Programs are more than events. They’re platforms for discovery, engagement, and lifelong connection — and our collections are the key to making them truly meaningful.

Let’s celebrate our collections by letting them shine in every program we offer.
